DIETS ARE A LIFESTYLE THING

Well girls it’s that time of year again……the dreaded bikini season! As I sit here watching the rain stream down the window it is difficult to believe that in a couple of months the lucky ones amongst us will be heading for the sun, donning our bikinis and worrying whether our bodies look as sleek as last year. 

The temptation at this time of year is to embark on the latest fad or crash diet in an effort to shift a few pounds in double quick time and the good news is that recent research has confirmed what most of us already knew. The fact is that extreme diets do not work! An over statement you might think but the facts are quite simple – yes in the short term you loose weight but in most cases as soon as you go back to your normal diet any weight loss you have achieved simply piles back on. 

So what to do? The answer is quite simple don’t go on a diet go instead on a lifestyle transformation. A healthy balanced diet and a sensible moderate exercise regime is all that is required…….easy to say I hear you yell! 

Step 1

Think small. By that I mean aim to lose 1.5 to 2 lbs per week, that is the only target you need. Don’t think I have got to lose a stone because that can be totally demoralising.

Step 2

Find a simple and uncomplicated diet programme that you can realistically follow  that is healthy, nutritious and above all low in fat. A low GI diet works well for some, others prefer the structure that slimming clubs afford. Allow yourself some treats you don’t have to be miserable but you do need to be sensible! 

Step 3

Do 30 – 40 minutes aerobic exercise per week, cycling, running, gym or exercise classes give good variation. Always take one rest day in between sessions. Try and follow a routine that works for you and be selfish in following it. There is no better feeling than arriving at work knowing that you have already been to the gym. Don’t be intimidated by the thought of exercise classes they are fun and a great way to make new friends. Structure and routine is the key. 

So there you have it 1.5 to 2 pounds a week, the only target you need. Oh…. and drop the dreaded diet word it’s a lifestyle thing!
